First organized in 1871, the Fisk Jubilee Singers set out from Nashville’s Fisk University to share songs of perseverance their parents and grandparents sang to endure the hardships of slavery. The original group toured along the Underground Railroad path and eventually went on to perform in England and Europe.
Watch the Fisk Jubilee Singers’ performance of “Mawu Nye Lolo” (“God is Love”) (comp. Walter Blege) and “Rockin' Jerusalem” (arr. John W. Work III) as part of our ongoing Intermission: Summer Video Series.
